At Map Psychology Solutions we have a pre-marital counselling program that is 6-10 sessions. We work with you and your partner to tailor the program to your individual interests and relationship needs.

Below are the top 4 benefits couples experience from doing pre-marital counselling.

1. Deepened Understanding of Each Other

Through the program, you and your partner gain a deeper understanding of each other’s personality traits, beliefs, opinions, hopes, emotions, behaviours, and values. Several couples I’ve worked with through the program have that they have learned new things about themselves, their partner, and their relationship. This new learning and understanding helps couples have a more connected, happy, and healthy relationship.

2. Overview of Relationship Strengths and Growth Areas

At the start of the program, you and your partner complete an assessment that asks questions about various aspects of your relationship. Your therapist will review the results from the assessment with you and your partner. You will also receive a copy of the assessment results, which many couples find helpful to gain an overview of the parts of their relationship that are working well and the parts that could be improved (a.k.a. growth areas). Through acknowledgement and awareness of your relationship growth areas, couples can build an even stronger relationship.

Below are some of the areas the assessment evaluates as well as the various 6-10 topics:

  • Communication styles
  • Conflict management and resolution
  • Partner style and habits
  • Financial management
  • Lifestyle and leisure interests
  • Sexual expectations
  • Marriage expectations
  • Parenting expectations
  • Cohabitation issues
  • Relationships with family and friends
  • Relationship and household roles
  • Spiritual beliefs

3. Reduced Marriage Stress

Planning and organizing a wedding can be stressful for many couples. As part of the program, your therapist will help you and your partner manage wedding stress, build support, and conceptualize which aspects of the wedding are particularly important to each of you. Ultimately, this helps couples reduce stress and conflict as well as feel like a team throughout the wedding planning process.

4. Open Conversation

Pre-marital counselling provides couples a safe place to have important conversations that are supported by one of our caring and non-judgemental therapists. Many of these important conversations focus on communication, conflict management, finances, values, and intimacy; all of which build the foundation for a lifetime of love and connection.
