Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions about counselling.
How many and with what frequency are sessions needed?
This counselling journey is yours to walk as it feels right for you. The number of sessions and how often you meet with your therapist will change depending on your presenting concerns and needs.
Most clients find it takes 3 sessions to feel different and 10+ sessions to see lasting change. By discussing your treatment plan and therapeutic goals with your therapist, you can set up a frequency that feels right.
Most clients choose to visit weekly or bi-weekly at the beginning and space out time between sessions as progress is made.
Will my benefits cover the cost of counselling?
Most extended health insurance plans cover all or part of the service fees of a Registered Psychologist or a Registered Provisional Psychologist. Usually you can find your annual coverage for psychological services in the section of your policy that also lists chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapy. The amount covered by your insurance changes by provider and policy.
What makes a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist different from other counsellors?
The College of Alberta Psychologists heavily regulates the education and formal training required for the accreditation of a “Psychologist.” To become a Psychologist in Alberta, practitioners are required to complete:
- Minimum level of education; Masters Degree inclusive of formal counselling practice
- 1,600 hours of supervised client hours
- Numerous professional examinations
A Registered Provisional Psychologist has completed all coursework and academic credentials.
In Alberta there are less regulations to work as a “counsellor.” This is one of the reasons why many insurance companies do not reimburse fees from working with counsellors.
How long are sessions?
At Map Psychology Solutions our sessions are 60 minutes or 90 minutes.
What should I ask in a 15 minute free consult?
Finding the right fit for your therapeutic journey is important. A 15 minute consultation (phone or video) is an opportunity to do just this! You are looking for someone you feel comfortable in sharing your journey with, so you may want to have a few questions prepared.
Some helpful questions to ask are:
- What experience do you have working with… (your main concerns)?
- What can I expect in the first few sessions working with you?
- What therapy models do you use? And what can I expect in my experience from them?
- How have people described their experience working with you?
Most importantly, remember that this path is yours to share with whom you want and feel safe with. If you feel like you’re looking for a different type of experience, let us know and we can offer suggestions of other therapists.
